movie promos & apple apps: rio, angry birds and hop

Rio and Hop.
Two very similar movies; two very similar promotion strategies. The studios behind the animated flops (I’m going out on a limb here and predicting they’ll both be sub-par) both used hit games on the App Store to promote those films.
And those games are FUN. Rio partnered with Angry Birds to produce a #1-in-the-app-store game. I tried the free version and thoroughly enjoyed it… but I didn’t expect anything else with the Angry Birds label. Make some version of that game and it’s all but guaranteed to hit #1. Smart move, but not as impressive as Hop.
Hop made a game that’s fun all on it’s own- it’s not playing off the success of an established brand. Ironically, Hop looks far worse than Rio in terms of movie-goodness. But the game’s fun. Both seem to be targeted at kids. The Rio version of Angry Birds is noticeably easier than other versions. Hop is filled with cute things and candy.
Overall, I’m impressed with the promotion strategies, if not the movies themselves.
